Naengmyeon

Yesterday Alex and I traveled for an hour and a half (getting lost several times along the way) to try Korea’s most iconic summer food, Naengmyeon. As the Korean official tourism page explains, “Naengmyeon is a unique Korean noodle dish that springs up everywhere as people seek relief from the summer heat.

Naengmyeon is largely divided into mul-naengmyeon and bibim-naengmyeon. Mul-naengmyeon consists of noodles served in a chilled broth with ice, while bibim-naengmyeon has noodles mixed with a spicy red chili sauce. Naengmyeon is so popular that practically everyone has a bowl during the hot summer months!”

Thus in search of these noodles, we explored the city to find one of the city’s best Naengmyeon restaurants, 을지면옥.  Arriving famished from skipping lunch and overheated from the sun, the chilled noodles were a fantastic treat.  Light, refreshing, and yet very flavorful, the noodles were everything we had imagined.  The trek was work it, Naengmyeon is amazing.  Below see the video for more info about how the dish is made.
